Lectionary Theme: Gifts of the Holy Spirit: For the spiritual nourishment of the people of God (10th Sunday after Pentecost)

  •

    1. The spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded.

    2. He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The Lord is with you, while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you abandon him, he will abandon you.

    3. For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law;

    4. but when in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them.

    5. In those times it was not safe for anyone to go or come, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands.

    6. They were broken in pieces, nation against nation and city against city, for God troubled them with every sort of distress.

    7. But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”

    8. When Asa heard these words, the prophecy of Azariah son of Oded, he took courage, and put away the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns that he had taken in the hill country of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the vestibule of the house of the Lord.

    4. Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit,

    5. and there are varieties of services but the same Lord,

    6. and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.

    7. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

    8. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

    9. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

    10. to another the working of powerful deeds, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

    11. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. One Body with Many Members

    12. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

  •

    27. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

    28. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues.

    29. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work powerful deeds?

    30. Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

    31. But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

    19. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

    20. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

    21. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

    22. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

    23. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Jesus and Thomas
