Lectionary Theme: People of God: Co-workers in building up the Kingdom of God (9th Sunday after Pentecost)

  •

    1. On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

    2. They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

    3. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites:

    4. You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

    5. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine,

    6. but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”

    7. Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

    8. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.

    9. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

    10. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

    11. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.

    12. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us.

    13. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

    14. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.

    15. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God.

    16. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

    17. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world.

    18. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.

    19. We love because he first loved us.

    20. Those who say, “I love God,” and hate a brother or sister are liars, for those who do not love a brother or sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

    21. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

    13. Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother or sister.

    14. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who considers it unclean.

    15. If your brother or sister is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died.

    16. So do not let your good be slandered.

    17. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

    18. The one who serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and has human approval.

    19. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

    25. An expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

    26. He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?”

    27. He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.”

    28. And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”

    29. But wanting to vindicate himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

    30. Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and took off, leaving him half dead.

    31. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side.

    32. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

    33. But a Samaritan while traveling came upon him, and when he saw him he was moved with compassion.

    34. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, treating them with oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

    35. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him, and when I come back I will repay you whatever more you spend.’

    36. Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

    37. He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
