Lectionary Theme: Pentecost: the Holy Spirit who renews the whole creation (50th day after Easter)

  •

    28. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

    29. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.

    30. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.

    31. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.

    32. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

    1. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

    2. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

    3. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.

    4. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

    5. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.

    6. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

    7. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

    8. And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

    9. Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

    10. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

    11. Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”

    12. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

    13. But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” Peter Addresses the Crowd

    1. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be ignorant.

    2. You know that when you were gentiles you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak.

    3. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.

    4. Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit,

    5. and there are varieties of services but the same Lord,

    6. and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.

    7. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

    8. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

    9. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

    10. to another the working of powerful deeds, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

    11. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. One Body with Many Members

    1. “I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling.

    2. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.

    3. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me.

    4. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. The Work of the Spirit “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

    5. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

    6. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

    7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

    8. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:

    9. about sin, because they do not believe in me;

    10. about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer;

    11. about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

    12. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

    13. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

    14. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

    15. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Sorrow Will Turn into Joy
